Williams: The Libyans now have a real opportunity to consolidate power

The opening session of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, under the auspices of the United Nations, was launched in Geneva today, Monday, in order to select members of the executive authority (the Presidential Council and the next government).

In a speech during the session, Acting UN envoy Stephanie Willemiaz praised the progress made during that arduous journey of political dialogue, and the overcoming of many challenges by the Libyan participants.

She also made clear that the Libyan people need success in political efforts, and to reach A solution to the crisis, adding that the Libyans are waiting for their officials to answer many questions about the country’s future.

A unified authority

In addition, it stressed that many Work awaits the meeting, but she said, “We have a real opportunity now to choose a unified executive authority.”

She indicated that all candidates for the Presidency Council will present their programs today, and the candidates are expected to answer questions collected by the mission yesterday, which include Approximately 1000 Libyan citizens on basic issues concerned with the future of the country.

It is noteworthy that the participants in the dialogue that began last November under the auspices of the United Nations, will meet starting from On February 1 to 5 in Switzerland “to vote on the composition of the Presidency Council, which will consist of three members and a Prime Minister, assisted by two deputies,” according to the United Nations.

The list of candidates

The UN mission announced, on Saturday, the list of candidates for the transitional presidential council and the post of prime minister, who will have to be appointed to ensure the transition process by the next December elections.

And this transitional council must “re-start” Unifying state institutions and ensuring security “until the elections scheduled for next December 24.

The list included the names of 45 people, including only three women, and included heavyweight figures in local politics, from the west and east of the country, the two main regions. They are competing for power, as well as others from the south.
