Introduction

Meta plans to launch a web version of its Threads microblogging platform, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

The report says that the web version will be launched soon, but the newspaper, citing its sources, said that the launch plans are not final and may change.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, said earlier this month that the company is working to make the web version of Threads available in addition to improving the platform’s search functionality. Zuckerberg then promised that it would be available within a few weeks.

For his part, Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, said in a post last week that Meta is testing a web preview of Threads, stressing that it still “needs work” before its wide launch.

Background

Meta launched Threads in early July as an Instagram-derived platform to compete with platform X, formerly Twitter, amid widespread dissatisfaction among a wide segment of its users with the policies of X’s current owner, Elon Musk.

Threads saw a high user count in its early days after launch, as its user count topped 100 million in less than a week before active users dwindled and engagement dwindled later.

Streams can only be used on mobile devices at this time through a free app that can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.

It is worth noting that the web version of the platform will work through a web browser, which means that access to accounts on the platform will be available from different computers.
