IHC asks parliament to review social media rules

Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday instructed the Speaker of the National Assembly to form a committee to review in social media rules prepared by the previous government.

Consideration of a petition for contestation social media rules Prepared by the previous Pakistani Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government, IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah remarked: government now changed and those who we in opposition before and were against these rules is now in power”.

“Wouldn’t it be better for in government consult with stakeholders and decide issue? he asked, adding that this court would always prefer rectification of laws that must comply with those who are in government.

He stated: “The Court observed daily what was constantly being done for the freedom of expression here [in this country]. rules must make everything clear, leaving nothing open, so that they cannot be abused tomorrow.”

The judge further directed government to correct rules as they said when they were in opposition.

The court stated that parliament should study the matter, and that he will consider the report as soon as it arrives.
