Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Meet with Senators in Capitol, Plans White House Visit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Meet with U.S. Senators

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to visit the Capitol and have a meeting with senators on Thursday, according to a Senate leadership aide.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) will host an all-senators meeting with Zelenskyy on Thursday at 10 a.m. ET. The exact location is yet to be determined.

There has been no immediate response from House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s office regarding this matter.

Zelenskyy’s Planned Meetings in the U.S.

In addition to meeting with senators, Zelenskyy is also expected to meet with President Joe Biden at the White House on Thursday, as previously reported by NBC News. Furthermore, he plans to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York City during his U.S. trip, according to a senior Ukrainian official.

Biden and Zelenskyy previously met in July at the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania. During their bilateral meeting, Biden expressed his support for Ukraine’s inclusion in NATO.

U.S. Support for Ukraine

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently visited Kyiv, where he met with Zelenskyy and senior Ukrainian officials. The visit aimed to demonstrate the unwavering commitment of the United States to Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and democracy, particularly in the face of Russia’s aggression, as stated by a spokesperson from the State Department.

During Blinken’s visit, the State Department announced additional aid to Ukraine, including $100 million in foreign military financing, $90.5 million in humanitarian demining assistance, and $300 million to support law enforcement efforts in liberated regions.

Zelenskyy’s Previous Address to Congress

Last year in December, Zelenskyy addressed a joint meeting of Congress, appealing for continued support as Republicans were preparing to take control of the House. He emphasized that aid to Ukraine was crucial for global security and democracy, and he urged the United States to remain engaged.

Zelenskyy concluded by stating, “Your decisions can save millions of people.”
