New York’s 150ft attraction The Vessel closes after three suicides in a year

One of New York’s newest tourist attractions has been closed to the public, having been the scene of three suicides in a year.

The Vessel in Hudson Yards, on the west side of Manhattan, opened in March 2019.

But it shut following the most recent of the three deaths on Monday, when a 21-year-old man died, the New York Times has reported.

Back in December, a 24-year-old woman from Brooklyn died, and the first death occurred in February last year when a 19-year-old man took his own life.

NBC New York has reported that the 150ft (46m) towering spiral staircase creation is closed while operators consult suicide-prevention experts.

The attraction’s website says: “Vessel is currently closed.”

The $200m (£147m) sculpture is in one of New York‘s most exclusive neighbourhoods and offers visitors views of the Hudson River and wider city.

The Vessel is made up of 154 interconnecting flights of stairs, with almost 2,500 individual steps and 80 landings.

Anyone feeling emotionally distressed or suicidal can call Samaritans for help on 116 123 or email [email protected]
