MotoGP: Joan Mir doesn't want number 1 on his bike

MotoGP world champion will continue to use number 36 on his bike

The MotoGP world champion, Spaniard Joan Mir (Suzuki), announced this Friday that he will keep the number 36 on his bike next season, avoiding the number 1, attributed the champion, but that has been bad over the past two decades.

“One day I got up and, ready, it was decided. The number will be the same as always. It had been nice to use 1, which is a unique experience and a dream, but 36 was the number I got here “ , underlined Mir in a video published on social networks

Remember that since 1999, the rider who uses the number 1 on his motorcycle has never managed to be a champion.

This sort of silly number started with the Australian Mick Doohan (Honda), who was champion in 1998 but, in 1999, with the 1 on his 500cc Honda , suffered l serious injuries that forced him to end his career.

Spaniard Alex Crivillé (Honda) would become the champion of that year and used the 1 in 2000, but the crown went to the American Kenny Roberts Jr. (Suzuki), who in the following year, also made a point of trying to break the problem by using the number 1, but ended up losing the title to the Italian Valentino Rossi, who never left 46.

Thus, the next champion to use the number 1 was the failed American Nicky Hayden, who won the World Cup in 2006, losing the 2007 title for Australian Casey Stoner.

Stoner also fell under the ‘curse’ of number 1, losing the 2008 title, year to Rossi.

Only in 2011 a pilot would return to use 1, in this case the Spanish Jorge Lorenzo, champion in 2010, but who did not escape the tradition and lose the title with the number 1 on his bike, for Stoner.

The Australian returned to use the aziago number in 2012, the year Lorenzo regained the title.

In the past nine years, no driver has used the number 1, reserved for champions, on their bikes.

Spaniard Marc Márquez never stopped using 93, Jorge Lorenzo, champion in 2015, kept 99 and now it’s his turn of Joan Mir deciding to continue using 36, thus escaping the number one jerk.
