F1: Portuguese GP has FIA support and just needs to sign the contract

Portuguese F1 World Championship is scheduled for May 2

International Automobile Federation (FIA) announced this Thursday the intention of the Portuguese GP to enter the 2021 calendar of the premier category of motor sports.

The race is scheduled for May 2, being thus, the third round of the season, but for its realization, the contract with the promoter still needs to be signed and the decision is approved by the World Motor Sport Council.

In a statement after the first online meeting of the F1 Commission, the FIA reveals that it has “the intention to fill the blank position of the calendar on May 2 with a race in Portugal” , with the exception, however, that “the final agreement is still subject to the contract with the promoter” , adds the FIA note.

If confirmed, it will be the 18th Portuguese GP, second in a row, after returning to national territory in 2020 after 24 years of absence from the championship.

In 2020, the race, which took place in the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve (AIA), which will receive this year’s race, was won by Briton Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), who thus became the driver with the most victories in the history of the sport, surpassing the 91 of German Michael Schumacher.

At today’s meeting, the F1 commission decided to increase the tire test days from 25 to 30, and to freeze the development of new engines between the beginning of 2022 and 2025.
