End of an Era: Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn Split After Six-Year Relationship

A source close to the couple tells PEOPLE that Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn have broken up after dating for six years.

The news that they broke up comes while Swift is on her sold-out Eras tour, where the actor has yet to be seen.

Entertainment Tonight was the first to tell the story.

Over the years, the famously private couple kept their cards close to their chest, with the English actor, 32, and Grammy winner, 33, denying engagement rumors.

Alwyn once joked to WSJ. Magazine, “If I had a pound for every time I thought I was told I was engaged, I’d have many pound coins.”

“I mean, the truth is, if the answer were yes, I wouldn’t say, and if the answer was no, I wouldn’t say,” he said when asked if he and the singer-songwriter were going to get married.

In 2016, Swift started dating the Boy Erased actor. A source told PEOPLE in the past that Swift is “pleased” in her relationship with Calvin. “He is her pillar. Their relationship is wonderful and grown up,” said the source.

During the pandemic, the two also started making music together. This led to a Grammy Award winner. Both of 2020’s sister albums, Folklore and Evermore, had songs by Alwyn written under the name William Bowery. Folklore won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2021, and Evermore was nominated for the same award in 2022.

Swift mentioned the actor during her acceptance speech.

“Joe is the first person I play every song I write for, and writing songs with you in quarantine was the best time of my life,” she said.

In her film Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions, which came out in November 2020, the singer talked about how they ended up working together. “I said, ‘Hey, this could be weird, and we could hate it, but since we’re in quarantine and nothing else is going on, could we just try to write this song together?'”

“Betty” and “Exile” from Folklore and “Champagne Problems,” “Coney Island,” and “Evermore” from Evermore were written with Alwyn.

“Both Joe and I love sad songs a lot. “Music has always brought us together,” Swift told Zane Lowe of Apple Music in December 2020. “We write sorrowful songs. We love sad songs a lot. What can I say?”

Many of the love songs on Swift’s 2017 album reputation, like “Delicate,” “Call It What You Want,” and “Gorgeous,” seemed to be about Alwyn and the couple’s quiet relationship.

After he broke his silence about the relationship by refusing to talk about his girlfriend in an interview for the October 2018 issue of British Vogue, the actor still wouldn’t talk about how they met undercover.

“I get why people want to know about other people’s private lives in our world. “Well, I don’t understand it, but I know it’s there,” Alwyn told Total Film in another interview. “I just don’t feel like it’s something I want to give to people who don’t know about it and have no right to it,” she said.

I know that’s something people want to know about,” the rising star told British Vogue. “I think we’ve done a good job of keeping our privacy, and people now understand that… I’d rather talk about work, though.”

In August 2018, the stars held hands during a rare public outing in London. This was just one month after they vacationed in Turks and Caicos. Swift skipped the Grammys because she was also filming Cats at the time. Instead, she went to the BAFTAs with Alwyn.

After the Oscars in February of last year, they were also partying with friends when Swift posted a picture of her sparkly Ralph & Russo dress.
