Acropolis Rally replaces Chile at the World Rally Championship

Covid-19 pandemic forces the cancellation of the Chile Rally

The International Automobile Federation (FIA), revealed this Friday that the Acropolis Rally, in Greece, enters the World Rally (WRC) calendar, replacing the Rally in Chile, whose 2021 edition was canceled due to the covid-19 pandemic.

After eight years of absence, the mythical Greek race, held on dirt roads, returns as the 10th of 12 races scheduled for this year’s season, and will take place between 9 and 12 September.

The return of the Acropolis Rally takes place after the cancellation of the Chile Rally, “due to the difficulties with travel and other restrictions caused by the pandemic “ , informs the FIA in a statement.

The Greek Rally was disputed for the first time in 1951, having been part of the Rally World Championship (WRC) 38 times, until 2013.

“It is a legendary event, which does not need of presentations, and that it has some of the most difficult specials in the world “ , underlined the president of FIA, Frenchman Jean Todt.

With two races already played (Monte Carlo and Arctic), Finnish Kalle Rovanpera (Toyota Yaris) leads the championship with 39 points, four more than the Belgian Thierry Neuville (Hyundai i20), who is second.

Remember that the Rally of Portugal is the fourth round of the WRC season and will have place from May 20th to May 23rd.
