Zach Goldsmith was fired from his position environment minister amid fears that animal rights could be downgraded under the Liz Truss government.
Peer was removed from him post for the Protection of Pets, but will retain another position at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he minister of state for Pacific Ocean and international environment.
This happens two months after Lord Goldsmith, who supported Miss Truss for the conservative leadership used Twitter to attack Mark Spencer, who was appointed minister of state in in environment department.
He wrote, “Rishi Sunak apparently agreed to make Mark Spencer next Defra secretary of state.
“Mark was the biggest blocker of measures to protect naturebiodiversity, animal welfare.
“He will be our own little Bolsonaro. Gloomy news for nature. But great news for political opponents”.
The sacking came after Downing Street said the reshuffling had been halted during that period. of mourning after the death of the queen death.
Lord Goldsmith was a close friend of Boris Johnson and his wife Carrie, but now he’s stripped of his resume he will no longer visit the office.
In a farewell letter to the staff of the department for Environment, food and rural affairs seen by The Guardian, Lord Goldsmith said he was “very sad” to be leaving after the “hurricane” for three years before listing his accomplishments, including in forestry, plastic pollution and the oceans.
He made what seemed warning Trassu, saying “We have so many more do to turn the tide here.
“Great Britain, after all, one of the world’s most nature-depleted countries. But if Defra continues to receive support, you need and deserve government, you can and you will turn the tide.”
One Tory MP, Henry Smith, said: “Zack was a fantastic champion of animal problems in government and despite all the other distractions, he played an important role in supply quite a lot of pieces of legislation that has made it on to charter books…
“I would have expected government fulfill all its obligations and promises according to the manifesto on animal welfare, regardless of of which persons play the roles in various departments.”
Truss was not interested in animal welfare”, while Defra minister
Animal welfare activists concerned that under Ranil Jayawardene new environment secretary and former trade minister farmers can be undermined on animal shelter in trade transactions.
Some Conservative MPs believe Ms Truss can plan drop animal welfare bill, despite what Mr. Jayawardena told the House of Commons last week that its passage will resume as soon as possible.
One MP said: “Liz can opt out of this. She had no interest in animal welfare, while minister in Defra.”
There is also fears that trophy the ban on hunting championed by Goldsmith against opposition from some conservative supporters could be abandoned. This would mean that importing parts of endangered animals shot overseas will be allowed to continue.
Lorraine Platt, co-founder of the influential Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation, of whose patron is Carrie Johnson, said she was disappointed with Goldsmith’s removal as he was the champion of animal care.
“Our government has always maintained that animal welfare standards will be upheld in Any trade transactions, but it is vital that this is respected and that our farmers do not suffer from low welfare trade transactions. We have higher animal welfare standards here than many countries so they can’t compete,” she said.
“Great Britain is behind definite countries on ending with cages and boxes is what Zach wanted do if he stayed on. There’s still a lot we can do on trade agreements. This is important for public that animal welfare has improved and we hope government recognizes this and continues to maintain and improve our high standards.”
