If you just want to show something briefly that then disappears, you can access a new Whatsapp function. However, the innovation does not offer real protection against further spread.

Whatsapp is promoting the new one-time view as a privacy feature. All apps will receive the function via update in the next week. Users can use it to send pictures and videos that can no longer be accessed after a single call. They not only disappear from the chat, but cannot be saved in “Photos” or the recipient’s gallery. Forwarding, marking and sharing is also not provided for the specially marked media. They also have a built-in expiry date: If you don’t look at the work within 14 days, you won’t see it at all. A viewed picture is also not included in the backup.

Encrypted, but not secure

Whatsapp gives as an example of the function the brief showing of clothes that you are currently trying on in the store, or the passing on of passwords. In our opinion, the media are marked “open” and cannot be called up again. This does not offer any real protection, explains the manufacturer. Recipients still have the option to take a screenshot or a screenshot while viewing. This could then also be used to save and distribute the “single-use medium”. In addition, the recipient can take a picture or video of him or her using a second device. Whatsapp writes that the media is encrypted and therefore cannot be viewed by the company. There is one exception, however: If a user reports a media file – for example because it has illegal, disturbing or other objectionable content – Whatsapp receives access to it.
