Italian rider started 26-year-old career in Malaysia
The end of the 2021 MotoGP season marked Valentino Rossi’s departure from speed motorcycling. Two weeks have passed since the last race of «Il Dottore» – the GP of the Comunidad Valenciana – but among the global legion of fans that the Italian rider has won over the last 26 seasons it will not be difficult to find those who already miss seeing him racing.
That’s why we now share this video that shows how it all started for Rossi in MotoGP when the discipline didn’t even have that designation yet and the lowest category was that of 125 cc.
It was on an Aprilia, on March 31, 1996, just a month and a half after his 17th birthday, that Valentino Rossi made his first race. It was in the hot and humid scenery of Malaysia, at the Shah Alam Circuit, in the race that opened that year’s championship.
Of the 33 who started from the grid, 13 did not finish the test. And of the 20 who crossed the line, 17 were on the same lap. Rossi was one of these. «Il Dottore» sealed its debut with a sixth place in the competition won by Stefano Perugini.
