United Nations Report Reveals Deep Ties Between Taliban, Al-Qaeda, and ISIS Khorasan in Afghanistan

UN Report Reveals ISIS Khorasan Expansion in Afghanistan and Al-Qaeda’s Resurgence

Introduction

A new United Nations report has revealed that ISIS Khorasan is rapidly expanding in Afghanistan, and its fighter numbers are approaching 6,000. Additionally, the report states that al-Qaeda is silently re-establishing training camps in the country and that the Taliban is allied with al-Qaeda, allowing it to operate freely and protect its leaders. The report has raised concerns about the national security interests of the United States and its allies, as relations between the Taliban, al-Qaeda, and other terrorist groups remain strong.

ISIS Khorasan in Afghanistan

The report detailed by Fox News states that the ISIS terrorist group Khorasan is the most significant terrorist threat operating in Afghanistan, with between 4,000 and 6,000 fighters. Since the fall of the country, ISIL-K has benefited from increased operational capabilities and freedom of movement in Afghanistan.

Al-Qaeda’s Resurgence

The UN report highlights that al-Qaeda’s relationship with the Taliban is not only strong but that al-Qaeda protects high-ranking Taliban officials and has tried to infiltrate the government. The report notes that the Taliban paid “social benefits” to al-Qaeda on a monthly basis. The report also notes that al-Qaeda is using Afghanistan as a logistics hub to recruit new fighters and quietly rebuilding its overseas operational capacity, in direct conflict with the Taliban’s promises to the international community for 2021.

United States’ Concerns

Republican US Senator Lindsey Graham commented on the report, stating that he had no doubts about the authenticity of the United Nations report. Graham explained that allowing ISIS Khorasan to operate in Afghanistan, as well as the relationship between al-Qaeda and the Taliban, affects the national security interests of the United States. He also criticized US President Joe Biden for creating conditions for the growth of terrorism in Afghanistan for political purposes, and warned that “we live in very dangerous times.”

Conclusion

The UN report highlights the dangerous and disruptive situation in Afghanistan, with divisions within the Taliban and power struggles. The report also warns of the long-term benefits that al-Qaeda will be able to reap from the ongoing tensions in Afghanistan. The report raises concerns about the national security interests of the United States and its allies, and calls for immediate action to address the threat posed by ISIS Khorasan and al-Qaeda.
