The speaker asked for a decision on plea call for removal of opposition leader “turncoat”

LAHORE: Speaker of the National Assembly Raja Pervez Ashraf was asked to make a decision. on appointment of Raja Riaz Ahmad, defector MP for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), as Leader of the Opposition in light of recent decision of the Lahore High Court (LHC).

The letter was sent to the Speaker by Barrister Azhar Siddiq, counsel for PTI party, who demanded decision on Ahmad’s fate made within 30 days by court order.

“The leader of the opposition has an important role to play in National Assembly, which included selection of election Committee of Pakistan (ECP) members and appointments in National Accountability Bureau (NAB),” he said.

He also accused the leader of the opposition for Existence in bed with administration of Shehbaz Sharif and more playing its constitutional role.

development came hours after the court decision of petition to remove Ahmad and instructed Ashraf to make a decision on case within four weeks.

On August 3, the Supreme Court was approached for Removing Ahmad citing that PTI is still leading opposition party in The House of Representatives and he was given the position without its approval.

The petition filed by Siddique stated that Ahmad was appointed without consulting his party, the biggest in House of Representatives, since the Speaker has not yet approved the resignation of its deputies.

Ahmad was appointed Leader of the Opposition with in support of 16 deputies from the opposition, including who parted ways with party chair Imran Khan, in May, a few days after PTI withdrew en masse from the meeting.

Ahmad joined in race for office together with MP for the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) Gos Bakhsh Mahar after leaving of Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) MP Munis Elahi.

His statement was signed by 17 deputies. who appointed him for office.
