Health Problems After Contracting Covid-19
Many people suffer from a variety of health problems after contracting Covid-19, as the risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, blood clots and other diseases may increase.
Identifying Post-Covid Syndrome
General practitioner Yulia Mironova in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper says: “Most people infected with Covid-19 recover within a few days or weeks after infection. Therefore, if a person continues to complain of health problems for at least four weeks after the onset of infection, this indicates post-Covid syndrome.”
Common Complaints
Many patients complain of shortness of breath, cough, fatigue, rapid heartbeat, difficulty concentrating and poor memory, she said. Treatment for these conditions usually requires supporting the body as it recovers from the damage caused by infection with the new coronavirus.
Multi-Organ Damage and Autoimmune Diseases
She continues: “Some people, especially those who contract severe Covid-19, suffer from multi-organ damage (simultaneous damage to the kidneys, heart, lungs, skin and/or brain) or autoimmune diseases, whose symptoms persist for weeks, months, or even years after illness. As a result, people who have had COVID-19 may be at greater risk of developing conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, blood clots, or neurological diseases.”
Challenges of Recovery in Intensive Care Units
According to the doctor, people treated in intensive care units have difficulty recovering, since the severity of the disease and prolonged inability to move can lead to the development of a serious complication – post-resuscitation syndrome, in which a person sometimes has to learn to breathe, walk and perform ordinary activities with great effort.
