Impact of Artificial Intelligence in the Business World
Introduction
Artificial intelligence has enormous potential to “revolutionize” the business world.
If programmers capable of designing generative AI systems didn’t think that their work would be at stake once the systems they developed started taking over their work!
Tech companies used to hire people who specialize in programming and coding to develop software and solutions, but some of those companies now rely on artificial intelligence software to get their jobs done quickly and inexpensively, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Impact on Software Industry Workers
Over the past period, AI solutions have emerged that can do many of the jobs that were done by ordinary people, and are being replaced by advanced technological systems, at the forefront of which were the jobs of software industry workers, which economists call “skill-oriented technological change.”
Economists also point out that this is exactly what happens when “technology makes workers more productive, while at the same time taking on complex and difficult parts, making the workers who do them more replaceable.”
Half of the American Workforce
According to the newspaper, “artificial intelligence is working to automate cognitive work” and this will affect “half of the American workforce working in these jobs” as the demand for people with average skills will decline in favor of various technological systems.
She also pointed out that “new technologies have the potential to adjust the balance of winners and losers in an increasingly polarized U.S. economy” across multiple axes.
Survive the “Economic Downturn”
Although she added that the launch of various coding assistance tools was linked to tech companies’ campaigns to lay off large numbers of employees at the end of last year, while “software engineer” jobs were the most unprofitable in the labor market since early 2023 in United States, according to Revelio Labs. At the same time, demand remains high for those who have “very advanced experience” in software engineering.
She explained what is happening in the job market in the software industry by the fact that growing companies are looking to weather the “economic downturn” and reduce their focus on employment, while some companies hire people with advanced and exceptional experience and maintain their presence, freezing any available options for those with average skills.
GPT and Microsoft Chat
Since the end of 2022, “BBT Chat” has reportedly begun to capture the boom of generative artificial intelligence, especially in the creation of texts, images, or even videos, and software developers have found a way to use and adapt it by helping them create and test software “codes”, and they did not know that they were faced with the fact that “Boom” would also go after their work.
And in mid-2022, Microsoft launched Github CoPilot, a dedicated programming tool that allows programmers and even ordinary users to use it to create software “codes” and help test them.
In addition, data from a Stack Overflow survey shows that about 70% of the 90,000 programmers who took part in the survey use artificial intelligence solutions in their work, while about a third of them indicated that these tools make them more productive.
Call for Government Intervention
Technology experts fear the risks and consequences of artificial intelligence systems if they are not controlled. At the end of June, Geoffrey Hinton, who is called the godfather of artificial intelligence, called on governments to intervene to prevent machines from taking over society.
Hinton made headlines in May when he announced he was leaving Google after a decade to speak more freely about the dangers of artificial intelligence shortly after launching ChatGBT, which captured the world’s imagination.
And an artificial intelligence scientist who teaches at the University of Toronto added: “Before artificial intelligence becomes smarter than us, I believe that the people who develop it should be encouraged to put a lot of effort into understanding how it can try to take control away from us,” adding, “Now there are 99 people who like it. One very smart person is trying to make AI better, one very smart person is trying to figure out how to stop it from taking over, and maybe you should be a little more balanced.”
