Call for Government Intervention

Technology experts fear the risks and consequences of artificial intelligence systems if they are not controlled. At the end of June, Geoffrey Hinton, who is called the godfather of artificial intelligence, called on governments to intervene to prevent machines from taking over society.

Hinton made headlines in May when he announced he was leaving Google after a decade to speak more freely about the dangers of artificial intelligence shortly after launching ChatGBT, which captured the world’s imagination.

And an artificial intelligence scientist who teaches at the University of Toronto added: “Before artificial intelligence becomes smarter than us, I believe that the people who develop it should be encouraged to put a lot of effort into understanding how it can try to take control away from us,” adding, “Now there are 99 people who like it. One very smart person is trying to make AI better, one very smart person is trying to figure out how to stop it from taking over, and maybe you should be a little more balanced.”
