Teen accused in Deadly Shooting of 16 year old girl in Bronx

Police say they have arrested a suspect in in fatal shooting of teenager who was killed near her high school in Bronx on Friday, latest shooting in month string which has left New York is shocked.

Jeremy Ryan, 17 of Bronx, been charged with murder in in killing of Angelly Yambo, 16 years old, who was shot while she was walking home from school.

AT news conference on On Saturday, Deputy Chief of Police Timothy McCormack said Ms Yambo and 16 othersyear- the old girl was hit by a stray bullet fired by Mr. Ryan from half in the quarter shortly before 14:00 on Friday.

Third victim, 17-year-old man, was hit by a stray bullet from one block from. Names of boy and others 16-year- old lady who survived their injuries have not been released.

Chief McCormack said the victims were caught between two people on opposite sides of in street who argued and “gesticulated” at each other until one Mr. Ryan pulled out out a gun and opened fire. Did not have clear what was the dispute about.

The chief said the shooting was captured on surveillance video and that mr ryan, who was also charged with attempt murder and criminal possession of weapons, did not criminal history and “zero contact the police at all.”

“We have two families who are completely destroyed right now: victim family and our shooter familyChief McCormack said.

Miss Yambo was killed just blocks from her home in South Bronx and around corner from University Heights High School. She was spoken dead shortly after rescuers took her to the Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center. in Bronx.

Chief McCormack said. on On Friday, police believed the victims were heading home from school.

On Friday, Commissioner Sewell said the shooting began when “arrogant criminals” stationed outside the school “opened fire during an argument.

Diana Marrero, 54, said she lived in flat on Same floor like Ms. Yambo and her family for some years in a building on East 156th Street in Melrose area. She described Ms Yambo as “always serious”.

“She used to say hello every day when she walked her. dog downMiss Marrero said. “She went to school and came back home. She wasn’t a girl who used to hang out there or nothing.”

Hazel Cheeseborough, 15, described Ms Yambo as a selfless and caring friend.

“She was very energetic,” said Miss Cheeseborough. who said she had known Ms. Yambo since elementary school. “She was a happy person. She showed you love and attention no matter what. She put you above herself.

Ms. Yambo attended University Preparatory High School, a charter school that held meetings and offered counseling services to its students. on Saturday morning, said Tavana Houston, the school safety agent there.

“Her friends came, her family come,” Ms. Houston said. “They had a small memorial. I know it’s because they had flowers.”

It wasn’t right away clear where the other two victims attended school.

The makeshift memorial was also set up outside Mini market Tony’s next to the site of Miss Yambo death. Candles and flowers were stacked on pavement and someone left pink heart shaped balloon with message written on This is in marker: “Sleep in heavenly world, princess.

Key Brooks, 50, lived in Neighborhood for 25 years old and lost her father to gun violence many years ago. Miss Brooks said no know Miss Yambo but told her death made her think of her own nieces and nephews.

She called gun violence”just heartbreaking,” adding that the Bronx “is going through a tough time right now.”

“His just heartbreaking for me,” she said. “I can’t put it into words anymore. This is just heavy.”

killing of Miss Yambo was latest in wave of gun deaths that started in first days of coronavirus pandemic. The killings alarmed New Yorkers and challenged Mayor Eric Adams. who said public safety is his top priority.
