Skoda students turn a Kamiq into a competition model

Skoda students will transform a Kamiq SUV into a competition model capable of participating in a race like the mythical Dakar Rally

Skoda’s Azubi program was inspired by a series of projects from 70’s, when some of the brand’s apprentices stayed to work until later, with the objective of developing unique models. Currently, brand students who are part of this program are motivated to create very special models, based on existing brand models, and these prototypes can never be static.

This year, the eighth project chosen uses a Skoda Kamiq SUV as a base and the idea is to transform this model into a competition car, capable of participating in events such as a Dakar Rally, for example. A more than perfect choice, as this is also the year in which Škoda Motorsport is celebrating its 120 years of existence. And for this same reason, your WRC experience and your collaboration will also be included in this year’s project.

Once a year, since the beginning of this year in 2014, a unique model is created and the last seven were just incredible. It all starts with a team of 30 students from the Skoda Academy and Skoda Auto Professional School of Engineering, who are challenged to create their dream car based on an existing production model. In addition to designing the car, students will have to build a fully functional prototype that can be driven.

During this process, all students have access to the development tools from new Skoda models such as advanced CAD systems, but also to existing brand prototypes. In addition, students also have the possibility to draw on the experience and advice of the brand’s design and engineering teams, but the final construction will always have to be left to the student team.

Students who successfully complete one of the brand’s 13 technical courses will be guaranteed a job at Skoda. And with this Azubi Student Car program, which has been part of the Skoda Academy since 2013, these projects have become an annual tradition as it gives many students the opportunity to learn different things from Škoda professionals while they design, develop and build an original vehicle.
