Signs of Liver Disease in Your Mouth: Pale Lips, Bleeding Gums, and More

Oral Health Can Help Identify Fatty Liver Disease and Other Conditions

Oral health can help identify a variety of conditions, including fatty liver disease, in addition to not brushing your teeth.

According to periodontist Dr. Suleiman Anwar, there are some telltale signs you should be aware of and your mouth may hold clues.

Dr. Anwar said: “Fatty liver disease results from the accumulation of fat in the liver cells. This accumulation can lead to liver inflammation and damage over time. Fatty liver disease can cause symptoms in the mouth because fatty deposits in the liver interfere with its ability to produce clotting factors, leading to swelling and bleeding of the gums.”

However, your gums aren’t the only part of your mouth that is causing concern. From the color of your lips to the smell of your breath, here are the main signs of liver disease that can show up in your mouth.

Warning Signs of Liver Disease in the Mouth

According to the doctor, the warning signs are:

  • Pale lips and gums: Damage to the liver can lead to anemia, which leads to pale lips and gums.
  • Bleeding and swelling of the gums: This can happen due to a lack of clotting factors produced by the liver.
  • Reddish tongue: Toxins that the liver cannot process enter the bloodstream and can change the appearance and moisture of the tongue.
  • Bad breath: This happens because the liver cannot properly detoxify chemicals in the body.
  • Dry mouth: Decreased saliva production can occur when liver disease impairs digestion.

“If you notice these symptoms in your mouth, the most important step is to see a doctor for an evaluation,” Dr. Anwar said.
