Shawn West lands a knee that KOs Boston Salmon however gets him DQ ‘d at LFA 84
Shawn West had a disastrous knockout as part of the four-fight LFA 84 card that took place on July 10 — unfortunately for him, it was via an illegal knee that gave opponent Boston Salmon a disqualification win.
West and Salmon faced off as the second of four bouts at LFA 84 at an empty Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, SD — the LFA’s first event since the global coronavirus pandemic forced hiatuses of professional sports all over the globe.
LFA 84: Boston Salmon defeats Shawn West by DQ after nasty illegal knee
In the first minute of the second round, both West and Salmon rocked one another with perfectly timed and accurate right hooks. Both men stumbled, but only Salmon fell to the mat on all fours.
As West noticed his fallen opponent, he took the opportunity to follow up and attack, landing a devastating knee that sent Salmon into unconsciousness and opened up a nasty gash on his face.
The referee stepped in to wave off the bout and West celebrated as if he had won the fight. The only problem: Salmon had a knee and hand still on the mat.
MMA fights in South Dakota use the old unified MMA ruleset; however, under both the old and newer rulesets, a fighter’s knee on the mat makes them a grounded opponent immediately. This suggests that West’s knee was illegal and the referee was required to award Salmon a disqualification win.
This battle marked the first for Salmon– a 2017 alumnus of Dana White’s Competitor Series– and his first win, after losing both bouts he had in the UFC in2019 He suffered first-round TKO losses to Khalid Taha and Randy Costa at UFC 236 and UFC Boston, respectively, prior to being launched prior to completion of the year.
West’s loss offers him 3 beats in his last 4 trips now.
