Sharp unveils 8k monitor with 1,000 nits of brightness

Japanese screen giant Sharp unveiled a 31.5″ 8k monitor this week: the 8M-B21C1. It is an LCD panel with LED lighting, good for peak brightness of 1,000 nits in HDR mode.
Sharp’s new 8k monitor (7680 by 4320 pixels) seems primarily aimed at the professional market, which is partly reflected in the marketing materials and the overall form, but all the more so in response rates.

The promised 60 hertz frame rate — even at lower resolutions — is up to that point, but 9 millisecond (GtG) image delays will certainly not appeal to competitive gamers.

Remarkable is also that the display does indeed have an HDR mode, but has not picked up a DisplayHDR banner from VESA. Sharp claims that the display can provide 1.07 billion different colors equivalent to the 10-bit color depth required for ‘true HDR’.Peak brightnesses at 1,000 nits (and typical 800 nits) would easily qualify for a DisplayHDR1000 certificate.

Certificate or not: the Sharp 8M-B21C1 looks purposeful on sharpness and color reproduction. The panel can mimic almost any kind of color gamut, including AdobeRGB, BT.2100 (HLG), DCI-P3 and sRGB (Rec. 709). On the wider BT.2020 color range, the screen covers 85% of all different shades. The 8M-B21C1 comes with factory calibration, but can also be adjusted manually. In addition to video and audio ports (none HDMI 2.1

, by the way) the monitor has a USB port, for example to load new firmware or specific profiles on the device.
