In the year 2021, nobody should be left with the appearance of Windows 10X, which was designed as Windows of the future expect Microsoft. The more universal operating system that was seen as Redmond’s answer to Chrome OS is no longer actively developed.
Off before the beginning? Windows 10X seems to be exiting
It is more likely, however, that Microsoft wants to say goodbye to the project completely. After all, Windows 10X had already been announced in autumn 2019 for autumn 2020. Then, as a result of the corona crisis, the original plan should have been pushed back and significantly changed.
Changes to the project timetable had aroused doubts
This had multiple dimensions. First of all, Windows 10X should also come for devices with one screen instead of specifically for dual-screen devices. This single screen use was then even preceded by the original objective.
Windows 10X for normal notebooks should appear in spring 2021. Only a year later – in spring 2022 – should the actual target devices, such as the Surface Neo, be equipped with the system.
New focus: In-depth modernization through Sun Valley update
There is no longer any talk of any of this. Instead, the Redmond group is concentrating on the “Sun Valley” 21H2 update of regular Windows 10, which will probably mean a major modernization.
Microsoft has planned a lot, especially in terms of design. Windows should become airier and more modern with the 21H2 update, including floating menu bars, as we know them from Apple’s new macOS Big Sur. From the environment we can learn that Microsoft’s Windows 10 redesign will be so extensive that the company could hold its own event at the end of May. The update should then appear in October or November 2021.
