As a minimal-code development tool based on a business technology platform, SAP Build puts the software company’s enterprise-grade technology into the hands of business users, who gain direct, secure access to end-to-end processes as well as data and its context. In the new development environment, business users with minimal technical skills can create or extend enterprise applications, automate processes, and create enterprise websites with a simple drag-and-drop method, thereby launching a new wave of digital transformation, the software company said. in mid-November, a hybrid event was held in Las Vegas as part of the TechEd 2022 conference.

“SAP Build combines the world’s most powerful applications with a platform designed to quickly unleash the potential of the business user experience,” said Juergen Müller, CTO of the software company, opening the conference presentation. – In a changing business environment, SAP Build, along with all the innovations just announced, is helping our customers to future-proof their businesses and get the most out of their technology investments.

Developed by a business user

The story of SAP’s low-code development tools began a few years ago with the announcement of Build.me, and its latest chapter so far has been marked by SAP AppGyver, a professional-grade no-code platform that debuted at last year’s TechEd conference. , where users can build mobile and web apps in minutes without writing code (see our article Anyone can become a developer in the 2021/24 release). SAP Build combines existing but still separate low-code/no-code software company tools into an improved unified development environment that is supported by three solutions – SAP Build Process Automation, SAP Build Apps (fresh version of AppGyver with new features) and represents the work area of SAP Build.

In the new development environment, the capabilities of the SAP BTP platform and business application datasets are also available to business users on the “last mile” of innovation, who can thus create applications and company websites (see second figure) and automate processes without transferring data to an external system, they must take it. SAP Build also includes a solution from software company Signavio, which provides users with a comprehensive view of the operation of processes, and based on this, they can easily assess which points can achieve the greatest impact, with which improvements and automation – the accumulated experience. into technology from 1,300 specific workflows 4,000 customers with 275,000 reference points from SAP Build tools also interact with software systems from other vendors, and the development environment also offers a program called Builder where users can connect with each other, exchange experiences in forums, and sessions and share best practices.

“The demand for modern digital solutions is much higher than professional developers can serve, so we expect that in the future business professionals will play an increasingly important role in creating digital solutions aimed at solving pressing business problems,” said Arnal Dayaratna, Vice -President of IDC. President of Research in connection with the announcement. – According to our expectations, more than 100 million business users around the world will be involved in the creation of digital solutions in the next 10 years. SAP Build gives them the opportunity to leverage their domain expertise and knowledge, as they can quickly create and distribute digital solutions themselves using a low-code development environment.

The question arises, if they get development tools with such powerful capabilities, will business users be able to take the bread and butter from the company’s IT department? According to Juergen Müller, not likely. Globally, there are already nearly 1 million fewer professional developers than needed, according to IDC, and that number could rise to 4 million within three years. All the universities and study programs in the world cannot fill this gap, the chief technology officer said.

Thus, industry players must act, and by giving business users the ability to create applications and processes that meet specific needs, professional developers are relieved as they can focus on solving larger and more complex problems and supporting a digital strategy. By combining low-code and pro-code development, companies can respond very quickly to changing business needs.

“SAP Build is the next level of natural development,” said Jürgen Müller. “For fifty years, we have focused primarily on professional developers, to whom we have provided all the tools for this work, in addition to the ABAP programming language, optimized for quickly building and scaling company applications. We are now expanding our focus on the low-code community and enabling the millions of business users who work with SAP applications on a daily basis to become developers themselves in collaboration with the company’s IT department.

Smart company is ready to launch

Every company is becoming a technology company, so in addition to unlocking the innovative power inherent in business users, SAP continues to focus on supporting professional developers. At its conference, the software company once again presented a number of solutions that increase the efficiency of development, which cover its entire technology portfolio. It also announced that by 2025 it will further educate 2 million developers through free education programs available on the SAP Learning website through a new collaboration with Coursera e-learning platform and support for technology lagging target groups.

“Together with SAP, we are launching entry-level professional certification training on our platform,” Coursera CEO Jeff Maggionkalda said of the announcement. – Anyone can join our training program, higher education or industry experience is not a prerequisite. We prepare participants for entry-level tasks and positions in the most in-demand areas. We give everyone the opportunity to expand their professional skills and economic opportunities.

In addition, SAP is launching a skills development program for target groups marginalized in technology. Their members can take part in free training and get a total of 10,000 professional certificates for free for filling the most in-demand jobs in the SAP ecosystem.

Last but not least, SAP Start, a ready-to-use, free solution that premiered at this year’s TechEd, provides access to all cloud applications of a software company as a one-stop-shop for a smart company. As a portal tailored to the user’s corporate role, the new solution collects all relevant business information from connected SAP applications in a single interface, making it easy to search and navigate, as well as review timely tasks and track their status.

Users can create custom cards on their portal to track sales processes, project reports, and leave requests, among other things. Some cards can even be used to perform actions in connected apps, such as approving purchase requisitions, or for more complex tasks, simply switching from cards to apps. SAP Start, which corresponds to last year’s SAP Mobile Start, is currently available in beta and is expected to be released in the first half of 2023.
