Ram Gopal Varma CLARIFIES his controversial ‘waiter’ comment about Aamir Khan’s acting in Rangeela

Aamir Khan and filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma had given a blockbuster film to the industry in the form of Rangeela which is still etched in everyone’s heart and mind. From stellar performances to iconic songs, the 1995 film was undoubtedly a roaring success. However, Aamir and RGV didn’t work together after the filmmaker made a controversial statement about Aamir’s acting. He had said that the actor who played a waiter in the film did a better job than Aamir. This statement didn’t go down well with Aamir and Ram Gopal Varma has taken full responsibility for his actions. RGV said that there was a misunderstanding between him and Aamir post Rangeela. Clarifying his controversial ‘waiter’ comment about Aamir’s acting in the film, he said that his infamous interview was taken out of context. The filmmaker said that he was trying to make the interviewer understand the technical aspects of that particular scene and he went on to write a headline that the waiter was better than Aamir, quoting him. “I am clearing this for the thousandth time. Khalid Mohammed was interviewing me and I made a technical point. People don’t understand how a performance works. I mentioned in the context if Aamir says the line ‘Tu idhar ghuma na’. Now the expression on the waiter is what makes people laugh. It’s not the line. The line is written and Aamir said it flatly. But because so much laughter came we think it is Aamir’s performance. If I did the wrong casting of the waiter who couldn’t give a counted expression, the scene would have been flat,” Ram Gopal Varma told Bollywood Hungama. Post that interview, Aamir tried contacting RGV for his controversial comments and he was not available. Aamir thought that RGV was not getting in touch deliberately. It made him feel that he actually said it.

“It was my fault to expect Khalid Mohammed to understand the technical details of how a performance works in a scene. I said it. Either he deliberately did not or he didn’t understand it, I don’t want to get into that. I said, ‘Aamir, the whole world has seen Rangeela and they loved it and that guy is in half a scene. Me saying that the waiter is better than you, in what way do you think it is going to make any difference. In fact it will come on me, because my saying that has not led to him signing for 100 films.’ But okay Aamir being a very sensitive and very good human being and at that point, what he himself was going through with the whole industry and Khalid Mohammed thing and all that, he felt betrayed and that’s my fault,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ram Gopal Varma on Monday announced the launch of his OTT platform, Spark OTT. marks his entry into digital space with his film “D Company”. The film will stream May 15 onwards.

Sharing a video of celebrities such as Prabhas, SS Rajamouli and Prakash Raj wishing the filmmaker all the best, he wrote about how his film would be streamed on the platform. The video also had glimpses of the film which is based on Dawood Ibrahim and showcases the events in his life from 1980 to 1982. It was initially to release in cinemas on March 26 but got delayed.
