Corby’s man killed his friend in a crash when he dangerously tried to overtake before coolly walking away from her behind how he fled the scene.
Ross Cooney, 33, was jailed for nine years after the terrible crash in Dunedin Road on September 14, 2019
He was driving a Ford Mondeo around 10 a.m. when he moved. over to wrong side of road to overtake number of vehicles and faced with Mercedes CLK on the road in opposite direction.
He fled the scene, leaving behind 45-year-Old Kelly Meek- who sat in in back seat of his car – as good as driver of Mercedes, 57-year-old woman.
The police called the police and an ambulance of in public but Kelly died on the spot.
driver of The Mercedes was taken to Coventry University Hospital. with serious injuries and continues to this day with her recovery.
The Northamptonshire Police Serious Clashes Unit has launched an investigation. leading to arrest of Cooney later that day.
At a trial at Northampton Crown Court earlier in the year, Cooney was found guilty of causing death dangerous driving and causing serious injury dangerous driving.
Yesterday (December 5) at the same court he was sentenced of nine years in prison. He was also disqualified from driving for 10 years and have to complete en extended driving test before obtaining a license back.
The lead investigator, Detective Constable Jeanette Maitland, said: “No sentence will ever make up for in death of Kelly Meek and injuries caused to driver of Mercedes but I’m glad Cooney was found guilty and sent to prison for his crimes.
“He not only drive incredibly dangerous on that day in 2019 and cause terrible collision, but suddenly he ran away, leaving left two women with serious injury behind.
“One of them, Kelly, was supposed to be his friend, but instead of helping and getting her medical attention, he is cold left her behind how he fled the scene.
“Kelly family showed real composure and dignity throughout this long process, for which I commend them for and hope for a conclusion of this case provides them with some semblance of closure.”
