Apple said in 2021 that it had acquired Primephonic, a streaming service for classical music, and would be integrating it into Apple Music through a new app devoted to the genre. On March 28, 2023, “Apple Music Classical” is anticipated to go live on the App Store. Pre-ordering the software will allow users to download it as soon as it becomes available. As part of an Apple Music or Apple One subscription, it is given out without charge.

In an interview with TechCrunch, Apple claimed that the new Apple Music Classical app gives users access to over five million classical music tracks, including brand-new, high-quality releases, along with thousands of exclusive albums, hundreds of expertly curated playlists, and other features like composer biographies and in-depth analyses of significant works.

The app provides a more straightforward interface for explicitly interacting with classical music. Users of Apple Music Classical can do searches by composer, piece, conductor, catalog number, and other criteria, in contrast to the standard Apple Music app. Editorial notes and descriptions provide users with additional in-depth information.

Using color schemes and visual references from the relevant classical period, Apple commissioned high-resolution digital portraits of renowned composers, including Ludwig van Beethoven, Frédéric Chopin, and Johann Sebastian Bach, for the app. Over time, further original artwork will be added. Apple has been collaborating with classical music performers and institutions to offer exclusive content and recordings.

At launch, Apple Music Classical will only work on iOS devices running iOS 15.4 or later. The software will also be available for Android “soon.” Under the brand-new @appleclassical Twitter account, users can follow news and updates on Apple Music Classical.
