Pakistan launches anti-polio drive targeting 44M children

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan on Sunday launched its first anti-polio campaign of per year, focusing on 44.2 million children younger than age of five.

Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only two countries in in world where polio continues to threaten health and well-being of children. Poliomyelitis affects the nervous system system of children and eventually leads to paralysis.

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif ousted off nationwide drive by injecting polio drops children in capital Islamabad, stating that Pakistan is, unfortunately, among the few countries who were still suffering from the disease.

Twenty cases have been reported in tribal North Waziristan area last year although the disease was localized among others children through immunization, Sharif said.

About 44 million children in 156 districts will be immunized.

Including 22.54 million children in Punjab, 10.1 million in Sindh and 7.4 million in province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Sharif said that government together with other stakeholders, including American billionaire Bill Gates and the World Health Organization, have made effective contributions to polio eradication. in Pakistan.

He presented certificates of commendation at the launch of frontline polio workers and praised their “priceless sacrifices”.
