Netflix Abandons Live-Action Film Adaptation of Masters of the Universe: A Costly Decision

Netflix Abandons Live-Action Film Adaptation of Masters of the Universe

Netflix has recently dropped its plans for a live-action film adaptation of the beloved ’80s franchise, Masters of the Universe, despite already investing millions of dollars into the project. According to inside sources, the streaming giant had allocated nearly $30 million for film development, covering costs such as the film crew, directors Adam and Aaron Nee, and actor Kyle Allen, who was set to play the iconic character Musclor.

Musclor in live-action, it will not be on Netflix

Netflix’s decision to abandon the project comes as a surprise, considering the extensive efforts made to revive the franchise. Having spent almost a decade in development, initially at Warner Bros. and later at Sony Pictures, the film struggled to find a director and lead actor. Ultimately, it was the resurgence of interest in ’80s franchises that caught Netflix’s attention and led to their involvement. However, the project’s estimated budget of $180 million proved to be the deciding factor in its cancellation, despite attempts to reduce costs.

Mattel Seeks a New Studio

While Netflix may have given up on the live-action adaptation, all hope is not lost for Masters of the Universe. Mattel, the company that owns the franchise, is actively seeking another studio to take over the project. Universal Pictures has reportedly been approached, but no final arrangements have been made. Mattel is also banking on the success of the upcoming Barbie movie to generate interest in their properties, including Musclor. If the Barbie movie performs well, it is possible that other production houses will be eager to capitalize on Mattel’s toy line.

A Project Too Ambitious for Netflix?

Masters of the Universe was an ambitious undertaking for Netflix, aiming to revive the iconic ’80s franchise and appeal to nostalgic fans. After successfully producing animated series like Masters of the Universe: Revelation and Musclor: Masters of the Universe, the streaming platform had high hopes for the live-action adaptation. The film was set to transport audiences to the planet Eternia and delve into the epic conflict between Musclor and Skeletor. Unfortunately, the exorbitant production costs ultimately led to Netflix’s decision to abandon the project.

Although the future of the film remains uncertain, fans of the Masters of the Universe franchise continue to dream of a successful adaptation that pays homage to the iconic characters. In the meantime, Netflix still offers the animated series, Musclor: Masters of the Universe, and Masters of the Universe: Revelation on its catalog in France.
