ISLAMABAD: President Dr. Arif Alvi on Monday appointed Mansur Usman Avan new advocate general of Pakistan (AGP) after accepting resignation of Shehzad Ata Elahi.
A statement released by Ivan-i-Sadr said the president had accepted the resignation. of Elahi – who abandoned the supreme law last a week for “personal reasons” – and appointed Avan AGP in accordance with article 100 of Constitution on advice of V prime minister.
Ministry of Law and Justice subsequently notified Avan as new AGP. The notice said that Avan would have rank and status of federal minister.
In his resignation letter to the President on On March 24, Elahi cited “personal reasons”. for submits his resignation. However, he later issued a clarification denying that he had been asked to resign.
Elahi was assigned to the AGP on February 2 after Avan, whonomination for the position of the chief bailiff of the country was approved by the president in December last year expressed his inability take charge as an AGP.
Avan announced his intention not to take office in letter to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. “Due to unavoidable professional obligations, I will not be able to work as an AGP at this time,” he said at the time.
A source close to him said that Avan was frustrated by the excessive delay. on Part of Ministry of Justice issue notification of his appointment.
