LUMS says fee hike decided before Covid-19 outbreak

LAHORE: Days after Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) increased its tuition costs by 41 percent, the university administration clarified on Monday that the hike was decided before the Covid-19 outbreak in the nation.

According to a declaration provided by the office of Vice Chancellor Dr Arshad Ahmed, the increment was “entirely consistent with prior years and took into account extraordinary increases in inflation, energy costs and currency devaluation”.

According to reports, per credit hour fee has actually been increased by 13 percent. Considered that typically trainees choose 16 credit hours per term, this amounts to a 41 percent general boost in tuition costs.

” The boost […] was 13 percent which we will keep an eye on in identifying the next feecard Formerly, a blanket fee was being charged for trainees signing up in between 12 to 20 credithours This fee is now [being] determined on per credit hour basis which will increase the term costs for some and decrease it for others [depending on the number of registered credit hours],” the declaration stated.

” The crucial point is that the overall fee to satisfy graduation requirements does not alter as a result of the shift to a per credit hour basis.

According to the declaration, among the factors behind increasing the fee was to “discourage students from taking course overloads which negatively impacts their learning”.

“LUMS fees cover a fraction of the total costs. As a not-for-profit university, gifts from donors, trustees, etc. helps to subsidize one out of three students,” it stated.
