Japanese comedian Ken Shimura dies from coronavirus: NHK

Japanese comedian Ken Shimura, who had been hospitalized after being contaminated with the new coronavirus, has passed away, public broadcaster NHK reported on Monday. He was 70.

On March 17, he was not feeling well and was given a medical facility where he was diagnosed with a severe case of pneumonia. He was going through treatment on a heart-lung machine.

On March 25, his office made public that he had tested positive for coronavirus.

After that, he had been hospitalized in Tokyo and passed away on Sunday night, NHK stated.

Shimura was born in 1950 in the city of Higashimurayama, Tokyo, amongst the country’s best-known comedians with a career going back to the early 1970 s.

While still in high school, he became an assistant to a popular rock and roll and comedy group, The Drifters, led by Ikariya Chosuke.

Shimura ended up being a full member of the band in 1974.

He was a recognized tv icon. He also played a three-stringed Japanese folk instrument called the shamisen.

He continued hosting TELEVISION variety shows even after his 70th birthday last month.
