It turned out how much money Xbox Game Pass brings Microsoft

Brazil recently gave the green light to Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion. In a report outlining the reasons for the unanimous approval, the Economic Protection Administrative Board revealed a particularly poignant detail about Microsoft: how much it earns from Xbox Game Pass, writes Forbes.

As TweakTown noted, the report notes that in Last year, Microsoft generated $2.9 billion in global revenue from Xbox Game Pass on consoles. This figure does not include PC Game Pass. It’s also unclear how Game Pass Ultimate revenue impacts this. However, Xbox Game Pass surpassed 25 million subscribers last year.

Xbox Game Pass generated 18 percent of Xbox’s total revenue last year ($16.3 billion) and 23 percent of Microsoft’s games and services revenue. ($12.6 billion). That figure is a drop in the ocean considering that Microsoft’s total revenue for calendar year 2021 was $184.9 billion. Thus, Xbox Game Pass accounted for just over 1.5% of the company’s total revenue during this period. (Microsoft’s fiscal year runs from July to June.)

Interestingly, the report also details “Nintendo and Electronic Arts multiplayer console subscription services.” This values them at $932 million for Nintendo Switch Online in 2021 and $356 million for Electronic Arts (presumably EA Play) on consoles.

Sony is also included in the table, which includes these figures but does not provide the dollar value of how much you earned last year with PlayStation Plus and the discontinued PlayStation Now services. However, according to the report, Xbox Game Pass accounts for 30-40 percent of console game subscription revenue for the four companies, compared to 40-50 percent for Sony. Based on this, after some multiplication and division, Sony could have made up to $4.2 billion from PS Plus and PS Now last year.

According to Forbes, this is an impressive thing no matter how you look at it. However, it is not known how much the acquisition of Activision Blizzard will boost Xbox Game Pass revenue, although the publisher is currently focusing on microtransaction revenue anyway, writes the business magazine.

Meanwhile, it will take months before we’ll find out if the deal between Microsoft and Activision Blizzard actually goes through. Companies still need regulatory approval in key markets.
