It has the site of Samsung's $ 17 billion chip factory

Samsung has reportedly selected Taylor, Texas as the site of a planned multi-billion dollar chip plant, which is expected to serve the company’s contract manufacturing operations.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Samsung will spend about $ 17 billion to build the plant as part of the company’s $ 205 billion investment over the next three years, citing sources aware of the case.

Documents submitted to state planners suggest a site that will create about 1,800 jobs when chip production begins in 2024, the report says. It is not clear whether construction jobs are included in this figure.

Taylor is said to offer significant tax breaks to influence Samsung’s decision, including property tax rebates of around 92.5% over the first 10 years. percent. These write-downs would gradually decline in the coming decades.

Samsung, the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturer, has been operating a chip plant in Austin, Texas for decades. The new site in Taylor is estimated to cover about 1,200 acres of land, far larger than the company’s first and only U.S. chip maker site. “A final decision on the location has not yet been made,” a Samsung spokesman told WSJ.

Today’s report comes in the midst of a global chip crisis affecting many industries. Samsung is not alone in its plans to expand capacity: TSMC has announced or is planning to expand in Arizona, Taiwan and Japan. In April, TSMC announced plans to spend $ 100 billion on chip production over the next three years. Intel, meanwhile, has projected the same amount over the next ten years as it expands and seeks to obtain orders from Apple under the program, according to Apple Insider.
