To achieve this goal, Jilani participated in elections from the podium of Jamaat-e Islami Kashmir in 1990s. party aimed at rigging elections and pass resolution in United Nations General Assembly in support of the right to self-determination. But electoral manipulation dealt a severe blow to Gilnai and other leaders. In 1989 uprising against Indian rule pointed in Kashmir and Gilnai and like-minded leaders founded the Hurriyet Conference, a pro-freedom organization. Gilnay was active member of Conference that supported the merger of Kashmir with Pakistan and sought to implement of UN resolutions. Throughout his life, Jilani led the freedom movement and inspired more how one generation. His vision of India and its politics in Kashmir remained unchanged.

Due to its ideology and position against India, Jilani went to jail several times. Ever since the Hindu nationalist BJP led by Modi came to power in India, biased politics in Muslim-majority areas of Kashmir is strictly monitored. BJP government must release legitimate Kashmiri leaders from prison and hold a referendum on self-determination, compliance with UN resolutions 1514 and 2649. Jilani’s lifelong sacrifice and ongoing struggle symbolize the indomitable resolve of Kashmiris against Indian occupation. His mission will continue until the Kashmiris win their right to self-determination.
