Guterres to Arabic: The Taliban must be dealt with to ensure everyone's security

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, told Al-Arabiya and Al-Hadath that the international community must deal with the Taliban to ensure the security of all.

He added: “It is important for the United Nations to play a role in protecting human rights in Afghanistan.” And he continued, “The international community should support the countries neighboring Afghanistan with regard to refugees.”

On Thursday, Guterres called the permanent members of the UN Security Council to a meeting to discuss the chaotic situation in Afghanistan, according to what he said Diplomats.

The UN Security Council called, on Friday, for all countries to cooperate with the relevant authorities in this regard. He stressed the need to bring to justice the masterminds, financiers and sponsors of terrorist acts.

The UN Security Council also stressed the importance of addressing terrorism in Afghanistan and ensuring that Afghan territory is not used to threaten or attack any country.

Guterres sent official letters inviting the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China to a meeting on Monday, diplomats told AFP.

For his part, Saudi Arabia’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Abdullah Al-Mouallimi, confirmed to Al-Arabiya and Al-Hadath that Saudi Arabia supports the establishment of stability and peace in Afghanistan and stresses to respect the will of the Afghan people.

He said that Saudi Arabia wants the Afghan government to look after the interests of the Afghan people, and that Afghanistan not be a base for terrorist organizations.

Earlier, Saudi Arabia confirmed that it is following with interest the current events in Afghanistan, and the permanent representative of Saudi Arabia in Geneva, Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Wasel, expressed, in a speech before the emergency session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Saudi Arabia’s hope for the stability of the situation in Afghanistan as soon as possible.

He said, “We hope that the Taliban movement and all Afghan parties will work to preserve security and stability, lives and property, and work to advance the interest of the Afghan people, renounce violence and establish lasting peace, in order to achieve the aspirations and hopes of the Afghan people for stability and a decent life.”
