Gaming during Father's Day: 6 games you can play with your kids

During Father’s Day, Dad is of course the center of attention. Breakfast in bed, maybe a small gift or just a day of gaming with the family or one of the children. Dad decides what to play. We can help with the latter.
As a parent of a child you are undoubtedly already known with games like Fortnite and Roblox. You play them online – provided you have a second console at home – of course. All nice and nice, but sometimes you want something different. And Father’s Day is the perfect day as Dad to decide which games you play together that day. In the list below we cover six games or franchises that you can play offline at least as a couple. Happy Father’s Day!

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

For the dads with a PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 at home, the real game of the year 2020 is Sackboy: A Big Adventure, a great title to play with young and older kids to play. The PlayStation game is incredibly colorful, bursting with visual effects, is very musical and also fully Dutch spoken. That way, the younger gamers among us know what’s happening on the screen.

The story is secondary to the gameplay, but that doesn’t matter if it is so much fun to play. Sackboy: A Big Adventure is a platform game in which you search for blue orbs, outfits and useful gadgets. Those gadgets give some flair to the levels, while the outfits give flair to the controllable figure you play with: the Sackboy. Or Sackgirl, because you can decide for yourself what that doll looks like. The game can be played with a total of four people at the same time, offline and online.

Minecraft Dungeons

Minecraft Dungeons can be played on Xbox, PlayStation or played on the Nintendo Switch. It is a kid-friendly dungeon crawler. In this type of game you simply enter a dungeon, explore the area, defeat all the monsters that come your way and collect all kinds of weapons that make the adventure easier.
For the older dads among us: this is a kind of Diablo lite, but that doesn’t mean the game is easy or superficial. Of course it’s a little easier, so younger kids can join in too. Nevertheless, there are plenty of weapons and statistics that you can expand and there are enough combinations to come up with that conjure up a unique and strong character. You can also play this game with a total of four people. Fortunately, you can do that offline, but you can also participate online if you want.

Battletoads

Battletoads (the 2020 version) is available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, and Windows 10. You can play this game with two other players, while you enjoy the dry humor and colorful images together on the couch. Much of the humor is slapstick and a little rude at times, so the youngest gamers may have to wait a little longer. But if you have an older child, then you can defeat hordes of enemies together with hard kicks and strong punches and combinations that those enemies do not have back from.
Battletoads can’t really be placed in one genre. The game offers many different styles of gameplay. The basics, however, are a beat ’em up, as you’ll be running from side to side very often, smashing and smacking everything you come across. Throw in some simple puzzles and racing sections and you’re guaranteed to have an afternoon of fun. You can play the game at no extra cost with a Game Pass subscription!
Knockout City

One of the most recently released games on this list is Knockout City. The game is a bit strange in this list, because there is no split screen multiplayer. So you can’t play this game with two people on the same console. Because the game is playable on multiple platforms (Xbox, PlayStation, PC and Nintendo Switch) and there is cross-platform multiplayer (it does not matter which console you play on, everyone plays together), an exception can be made.

In Knockout City you have to deal with violent dodgeball games. You play in teams of three against three or four against four and must be the first to achieve a minimum number of points three times. You do this by throwing effect balls and outsmarting your opponent with catches and strategic moves. You have several options at your disposal, but nevertheless the gameplay is very accessible.

Despite the violence with the ball, you can play this game with a younger child who is interested in it, because of the cartoonish appearance and the fact that no blood is present. By the way, after playing you can further shape your character as you want. Just like in Sackboy: A Big Adventure you can present yourself however you want within the wardrobe that is offered. The game is free to play up to and including level 25.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Actually Mario Kart falls in the same row as Fortnite and Roblox in terms of multiplayer games . It’s the type of game your kid has probably heard about, but Mario Kart 8 Deluxe still deserves a firm spot on this list. After all, the kart gameplay is mega accessible thanks to a few options. Then consider the possibility for your child’s kart to automatically drive forward and make adjustments in every corner, so that they are not immediately out of the race when things go wrong.

In addition, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is very colorful and there are more than enough tracks and playable characters to fill a whole day with (otherwise you can still tear around with your Mii). This game is available exclusively on Nintendo Switch (and on Wii U, if you still have it in the attic) and you can play offline with a total of four people at the same time.

Lego games

If one of the above titles is not to your liking if you simply don’t have them yet, there is always a wide variety of Lego games to choose from. Many have been published in recent years, sometimes two in one year. As a result, the range and variation is very large. You have Lego games that are about Harry Potter, Batman, the Marvel universe and the City theme.
Also there is Lego Dimensions, where building real physical Lego artworks is combined with building in the game world. The game has since been taken out of production, but you may still be able to pick it up second-hand. Otherwise, many Lego games are available digitally and in stores for a bargain price, allowing you to explore a world of levels together and unlock characters.
