Former military dictator Musharraf passes away in Dubai

DUBAI/ISLAMABAD: Former military Retired ruler General Pervez Musharraf dies in Dubai after a long illness, reports citing members of his family Sunday said.

The reports indicate former army commander, aged 79, died of amyloidosis, a disease caused ascending of a protein called amyloid in bodies, leading to organ dysfunction.

He spent his final months in hospital in United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Musharraf, who seized power in bloodless coup in 1999 and then served as president until 2008, left Pakistan in 2016 in middle of treason trial, for for health reasons, which, according to his lawyers, prevented him from being brought to trial.

Since then, he has spent most of of its time in voluntary exile in United Kingdom and the Middle East.

He tried to return to power in March 2013, challenging general elections, but were unsuccessful.
