A firefighter died in a fire in former department store in Edinburgh, the Scottish police said.
38-year-old Barry Martin from Fife was seriously injured during the fight. flames at historic Jenners building on pink street on Monday.
He was in a critical condition at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh but died today, Police Scotland said.
Four more firefighters. who we also taken to the hospital for treatment and were subsequently released.
Two were treated for burns and two for smoke inhalation.
The police officer was also processed for inhale smoke in the hospital and then discharged.
Superintendent David Robertson of Edinburgh Division, said “Our thoughts with in familyfriends and colleagues of Barry at this very difficult time.
“Our investigations are ongoing to establish full circumstances.”
Around 11:30 am, more than 100 firefighters took part in extinguishing the fire.
Witnesses saw a fireman covered in soot being helped from building from colleagues.
Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon described death as a terrible tragedy.
“It’s terribly sad news’ she tweeted.
“My deepest condolences to Barry family friends and colleagues.
“This is a terrible tragedy. for Everybody who loved him but also reminder of the selfless courage shown by our firefighters in line of duty everyday”.
The interim head of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said he and his colleagues were “devastated” death.
Ross Haggart said: “I say for entire service when I say that we are all devastated by the loss of Barry and our thoughts remain with his familyfriends and colleagues at this deeply disturbing time.
“Both Barry family and the service was overloaded with messages of support we received and thank you all for the time they spent share these.
“Barry family would also like express gratitude to all medical staff who taken care of for to him.”
Mr. Martin first Scottish firefighter die while on duty since Ewan Williamson, who died after being shot at the Balmoral Bar in Edinburgh in 2009.
