Edward Snowden: Putin grants former Contractor NSA Russian citizenship


Russian President Vladimir Putin provided former NSA officer Edward Snowden has Russian citizenship, according to official decree published on Russian government portal Monday.

Snowden is accused of espionage as well as theft of government property in United States for treasure leak of information on American intelligence and mass surveillance programs to media.

39-year-old lived in exile in Moscow after an initial trip to Hong Kong after his 2013 public information disclosure of secret information. He facing up up to 30 years in prison in United States.

In November 2020, Snowden and his wife Lindsey Mills applied for Russian citizenship. He was already granted permanent residence in Russia.

Putin decision grant snowden citizenship comes just days after the Russian president threatened to escalate the war in Ukraine announcing “partial mobilization” of citizens.

In 2016, the US Congress released a report stating that Snowden was in contact with Representatives of Russian intelligence since arrival in Russia. Snowden immediately disputed the allegations. writing on Twitter “they claim without proof that I in collusion with Russians”.

In a tweet on On Monday, Snowden wrote: “Years later of separation from our parents, my wife and I do not want to part with our SONS. After two years of waiting and almost ten years of exile, a little stability will make the difference for my family. I pray for Confidentiality for them – and for us all.”

Snowden will not be subject to “partial mobilization” announced Putin, since he did not serve in Russian army, according to his lawyer Anatoly Kucheren, quoted by the Russian state media RIA News on Monday.

“Now the spouse will receive citizenship after he has received it. Now the spouse will apply, ”Kucherena told RIA Novosti, referring to Snowden’s wife Mills.
