Admin, NDMA along with Army, Rangers, Navy in field to protect people, installations
With Cyclone Biparjoy moving closer to Pakistan’s coast, the administration, along with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Army, Rangers, and Navy, are working tirelessly to protect people and installations. As of now, 67,367 locals have been shifted to safer locations, and 39 relief camps have been set up in three coastal districts.
Challenges of evacuation acknowledged
The evacuation of a large number of people is a challenge, as acknowledged by Sherry Rehman. However, the concerned departments are on high alert, and the NDMA has urged people living in coastal areas to follow the instructions of the local administration.
Latest update on Cyclone Biparjoy
As per the latest alert issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department, Cyclone Biparjoy is at a distance of about 310km from Karachi, with maximum sustained surface winds of 150-160km/hour and sea conditions being phenomenal. The cyclone is expected to make landfall on Thursday evening between Keti Bandar in Sindh and Kutch in Indian Gujarat.
Efforts by authorities
The Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, has chaired a meeting to review the preparedness ahead of the possible impact of the cyclone. The NDMA has also mobilized health sector partners for initiating a preparedness and response plan. The World Health Organization has issued immediate directives for preparations for Tropical Cyclone Biparjoy emergency preparedness and response measures.
Residents shifted to safer locations
Overall, 67,367 locals have been shifted to safer locations in three coastal districts, and 39 relief camps have been established. The concerned authorities have established mobile hospitals in coastal areas and provided adequate emergency medical assistance.
Rain in other parts of the country
Apart from the coastal areas, some parts of Punjab, Kashmir, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have also experienced windstorms, rain, and hailstorms.
Pakistan Army troops engage in evacuation and relief activities
The Pakistan Army has expedited its efforts for the evacuation of vulnerable communities of coastal areas on a fast-track basis. They have also issued statistics pertaining to the masses relocated from the areas.
