Chia miners dump SSDs and HDDs en masse after crash

Crypto farmers who actively mined Chia now appear to offer the used SSDs and HDDs for sale en masse. In some cases, the second-hand discs would even be sold ‘as new’, while fervent Chia mining does leave some wear and tear behind.
The reason for suddenly selling the hardware is obvious: Chia’s course has sunk deep. In mid-May, a single Chia coin was worth over 1,300 euros; At the time of writing, that valuation has fallen to approximately 260 euros. Chia, unlike many other cryptocurrencies, is not mined with the so-called Proof of Work, where especially video cards prevail. The relatively new coin is earned through Proof of Storage. By offering a large bulk (fast) storage to the network, Chia miners scrape the currency together.

Around May, Chia was the reason that the prices of HDDs and SSDs rose slowly. Around the cryptocurrency’s peak value, computer storage was massively stocked, similar to how Ethereum, among others, generated a prolonged run on video cards .

In a Vietnamese Facebook group of about five thousand Chia- farmers, the suffering was shared many times over, as reported VNExpress. The group was inundated last week with miners offering SSDs and HDDs for sale at a loss — in some cases, the drives are as little as three months old.

On other websites (including WccfTech

) it is claimed that retired Chia slices are sometimes also sold ‘as new’, although no direct examples are referred to. Yet it is not inconceivable that some crypto farmers do indeed try to limit their loss in this way; after all, the damage from use cannot be measured at a glance. Chia mining does not have to be directly disastrous for a hard disk or SSD, but the Proof of Storage algorithm is a heavier process than the everyday use of a computer disk. A firm HDD that has mined Chia non-stop for several months can quickly reduce its life for several years. It’s not for nothing that mining Chia breaks the warranty of many disk manufacturers.

If you are looking for some second-hand storage for your computer these days, you would do well to ask the Marktplaats seller why exactly that disk is goes out the door.
