Android 12 has been officially announced and has been a beta version for some smartphones since May ready for testing. A few more months will pass before the final release, but some manufacturers already know which smartphones will receive the big update. We summarize.

Jump to manufacturer:

  • Google Pixel
  • Samsung
  • Huawei
  • Honor
  • Oneplus
  • HMD Global / Nokia
  • Sony
  • Oppo
  • Xiaomi

  • Lenovo / Motorola
  • Realme
  • Vivo
  • Who else? (Asus, LG, Microsoft and others)

What does Android 12 bring?

Already after the release of the first developer preview it became clear that Android 12 would be a much bigger update than the previous versions Android 10 and Android 11. They also had all kinds of relevant new features on board. With the new OS iteration, however, Google is delivering the most extensive redesign since the introduction of Material Design in 2014. With the help of the new “Material You” design language, your Android smartphones are to be even more personalized in order to adapt them to your own wishes. During the announcement, Google spoke of “Form Follows Feeling” as one of the concepts behind the new design language. Material You should be incorporated into all of the Group’s products in the long term – from Chrome OS to Wear OS to smart displays and more.

The visual appearance of the system and apps should in future follow the user’s preferred color palette, which is extracted from the selected screen background. The colors are also reflected in the revised control elements, which in turn can be extensively individualized. If you don’t like the suggested colors, you can lend a hand yourself using color palettes. This function can be tried out on Pixel smartphones since Beta 2, which was released on June 10th.

Part of the redesign is the revision of the notification bar, quick settings and widgets. Google Play and the smart home control, which were last integrated into the power button menu with Android 11, move into the quick settings. The activation of the Google Assistant optionally moves into the power button so that it cannot be started with the hotword “Okay Google” or with a cumbersome swiping gesture.

You can find an overview of the announced new functions here:

Other new features of Android 12 include security, privacy and the Interaction between other products in the Google ecosystem and beyond. Android smartphones such as Apple’s iPhones should also be able to be used as car keys in the future.

On the developer side, Android 12 offers the integration of new formats such as HVEC and AVIF – the latter should provide better image quality and compression than Jpeg. Furthermore, Google is drilling up the display of content such as images and Co. in messaging apps with rich content and simplifies it for developers with a uniform interface (API).

In August the developer wants to achieve platform stability in order to release the big update possibly again in September. With the first public beta, which appeared on May 18, 2021, Google opened Android 12 for devices from other manufacturers. You can find out which manufacturers and devices are part of the public beta in this article:

  • 4. Public Beta: August 2021
  • Final release: Autumn 2021 (probably in September)

As every year, the question arises: Which smartphones get the new major OS version? With some manufacturers, it is becoming easier and easier to identify the corresponding devices even before the official release. This is the current status:

Google: Android 12 update from Pixel 3 to 5

Among others, Android 12 is safe for Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G and 5. (Photo: t3n)

With its Pixel smartphones, Google has always communicated how long the devices will receive updates. The models are guaranteed to receive major OS updates and monthly security patches for three years. Since Google is the developer of Android, the Pixel smartphones not only get exclusive access to the developer versions, like this nder are always the first devices to receive the new Android versions in autumn.

After the Pixel 2 (XL) received the last update last year, the Pixel 3 and 3 XL will end in October 2021 (Test), which came on the market in November 2018.

  • Pixel 5 (update guarantee until October 2023)
  • Pixel 4a 5G (update guarantee until October 2023)
  • Pixel 4a (update guarantee until August 2023)
  • Pixel 4 XL (update guarantee until October 2022)

  • Pixel 4 (update guarantee until October 2022)
  • Pixel 3a XL (U pdate guarantee until May 2022)
  • Pixel 3a (update guarantee until May 2022)
  • Pixel 3 XL (update guarantee until October 2021)
  • Pixel 3 (update guarantee until October 2021)

This year the update cycle could be extended for some manufacturers. Because Google and Qualcomm announced in December 2020 that they would allow software updates for a period of four years. Google’s 2021 pixel models should serve as a role model here.

Samsung: The new update king

Samsung has made exemplary progress in terms of Android updates and security patches in recent years. Although the manufacturer is not the fastest when it comes to providing OS updates, this is also getting better and better. Since December 2020, the industry leader has supplied a large number of its devices with Android 11 and has also given them regular security patches.

Samsung is also excellent in terms of the update guarantee: In summer 2020, the manufacturer had a three-year period for many of its device classes Update period for Android updates announced, in February 2021 Samsung stepped up and promised four years of security patches for over 130 models. No other manufacturer currently offers this – not even Google.

Android 12 update for Huawei smartphones? No!

    Huawei P40 Pro

Huawei is still subject to the US sanctions imposed in May 2019 and is not allowed to use Google services such as the Play Store, among other things , Gmail, Maps and more. With the announcement of EMUI 11 last year, Huawei decided not to update to Android 11. All current models of the manufacturer continue to run on Android 10. With the introduction of Harmony OS 2.0, the case is now clear: Huawei is relying on its own operating system and is completely turning its back on Google’s Android.

The manufacturer already has many devices that should be updated to Harmony OS 2.0. This even includes smartphones from 2017 like the Huawei P10. So far, however, Huawei has only released the OS updates for its existing devices for China. It is clear, however, that European devices should also be updated to the new OS in order to strengthen their own ecosystem.

Honor: New Hope for Android 12

At Honor, de r former Huawei subsidiary, the tide could turn. The company has been independent from Huawei since the end of 2020 and has since signed contracts with AMD, Intel, Mediatek, Micron Technology, Microsoft, Qualcomm, Samsung, SK Hynix and Sony. With the View 40, the manufacturer has even presented the first new smartphone – but currently only for the Chinese market. The prospect of the return of Google services on in-house devices is excellent given Huawei’s move away. So far, however, nothing official has been communicated. Here it says: wait.

Oneplus: Android 12 updates only for the top models?

So far, Oneplus has guaranteed two major OS updates for its models. In the course of the diversification of the manufacturer, however, the update strategy changes: Only the more expensive models are guaranteed two large OS versions. The situation is different with the cheaper variants such as the N10 5G and N100: This is over after the update to Android 11. When it comes to security patches, Oneplus also cuts a year on its budget models: while the top models receive security updates for three years, the N10 5G and N100 only get two years. The new Nord model CE 5G, which costs about as much as the N10 5G, will in turn receive Android updates for three years.

Nokia manufacturer HMD Global has been promising Android updates for two years for years. That changes with the introduction of the new 2021 models X10 and X20, which the manufacturer promises updates for three years. In view of the update guarantee, we can count on Android 12 for the following models. It cannot be ruled out that further devices will receive the next OS – we’d better wait for an official statement here.

    • Nokia X20 (3 years Android updates, Android 11 ex works)
    • Nokia X10 (3 Years Android updates, Android 11 ex works)

    • Sony Xperia 1 III
    • Sony Xperia 5 III
    • Sony Xperia Pro
    • Sony Xperia 1 II

Oppo: Android 12 update for all current devices

Oppo started in Germany at the beginning of 2020 and has already launched a fairly extensive portfolio. In an interview with t3n, Johnny Zhang, CEO of Oppo Germany, promised at least two Android system updates for every current Oppo smartphone. Every smartphone that came onto the market with Android 10 receives at least one update to Android 12. This applies to both the Find-X, Reno and A series. For the Find-X and Reno series there is also a security patch update once a month, for other models every less than three months.

  • Android 12 updates for Xiaomi

    Xiaomi Mi 11. (Image: Xiaomi)

With Xiaomi it is a little difficult to identify which devices are getting Android 12. On the one hand, because the manufacturer does not clearly communicate its update plans, on the other hand, because the version numbers of the in-house MIUI user interface are decoupled from the Android version. MIUI 12 and 12.5 currently run on Android 11. The previous MIUI 11 was based on both Android 10 and 11, depending on the device.

As a rule, Xiaomi misses its Mi-, Mi-Mix, Mi-Note and Mi-T series have two major Android updates each. The situation is similar with the Redmi-K as well as the Poco-F and -X series. Accordingly, we speculate that the following Xiaomi devices should receive Android 12:

    • Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra
    • Xiaomi Mi 11 Lite 5G
    • Xiaomi Wed 11i
    • Xiaomi Mi 11 (update is likely)
    • Xiaomi Mi 10 5G (update is likely)

    Motorola and Android 12?

The Motorola Razr 5G is guaranteed to receive Android 12. (Photo: t3n)

Motorola is looking rather bleak when it comes to Android updates. Android 11 has not yet arrived on any of the devices even in February 2021, and the manufacturer only gives a two-year update guarantee for its more expensive models. This means that many devices should not receive Android 12 after their update to Android 11. The following models are probably in the running for the 2021 OS update:

    • Motorola Razr 5G
    • Motorola Razr 2019 (uncertain)
    • Motorola Edge
    • Motorola Edge Plus
    • Motorola Moto G 100

    • Motorola Moto G50

Vivo, started in Germany in October 2020, has a small portfolio in this country on Begin. All models should also get the next OS jump to Android 12 after their updates to Android 11. For new top models, starting with the X60 5G, Vivo promises an update guarantee of three years.

    • Vivo Y72 5G
    • Vivo X51 5G

Who else? Microsoft, LG, Asus …

Apart from the manufacturers mentioned, other players will also be their devices with the update to Android 12 supply. What is certain is that Microsoft will heave its Surface Duo (test) to Android 12. When that will be is a big question. Because despite the US market launch in autumn 2020 and availability in Germany since February 2021, Android 11 will not be available until summer 2021. Asus should also bring some of its ROG and Zenfone series of smartphones to Android 12.

When owners of LG smartphones will ever receive an update to Android 12 is questionable. The manufacturer officially said goodbye to the smartphone business at the beginning of April. After all, the company promises to provide its top models from 2019 and newer with three major Android updates. These include the G and V series, the Velvet and the Wing. Other models such as the LG Stylo and the K series will only receive two Android updates. LG has not given a time frame.

These models will supposedly get Android 12 :

    • LG Wing
    • LG Velvet

    • LG Velvet LTE
    • LG V50S
    • LG V50
    • LG G8
    • LG Q31
    • LG Q52
    • LG Q92

As soon as manufacturers explain their specific plans, we will update this article.
