AJK Sericulture Department and Poonch University Jointly Promote Handicraft Production

MIRPUR (AJK): Sericulture Department of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Department of Entomology of Poonch University decide to exchange bilateral cooperation for promotion of Handicraft industry of Kashmir of Silk farming under the spirit of an ongoing large-scale program to combat poverty in the liberated territory.

Two public branch institutes took in decision during the day building shop of silk farmers, hosted AJK Sericulture Department at the University of Punch in Ravalakot on Friday.

Silk farming is traditional as well as home founded industry of state of Jammu and Kashmir, foundation in Azad Jammu and Kashmir in 1951.

Awareness, training seminar on Sericulture was engaged in, among other things, a large number of of students, teachers of university and sericulture farmers, and senior officers of department of Sericulture of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Sardar Nasir Rahim, Dean of the University of Poonch Ravalakot, addressing the inaugural session, praised move of sericulture department join Arms with faculty of university for so important and noble cause.

Sericulture Deputy Director Tahir Masood, Entomologists Research Center, Rizwan Ullah Khan, Assistant Director Fahad Keyani and ASDO Salaar Mehmood from the Department of Sericulture made detailed presentations regarding the history of sericulture in AJK since his emergence in liberated territory, strike of Sericulture on Livelihoods, poverty alleviation, women’s empowerment, national economy and environment of state.

Presentations made officers of sericulture department also dedicated various uses of mulberries and mulberry products, including medicines and silk garments, etc.

Dr. Umer Ayyaz Sheikh, Associate Professor of Entomology also informed about various disease of silkworms and management plans practically protect silkworm cultivation.

During event some potential farmers also shared their practical experience and praised the efforts of department of sericulture for training and provision of required facilities for 1500 farmers in AZhK.

Turning to the final session of in the event, Director of the State Department of Sericulture AJK Syed Ali Asghar Shah said that the cooperation between the Department of Sericulture and the University of Punch, also was appreciated by the farmers participants that move both institutions will be very helpful for farmers as well future of sericulture in state.

He emphasized that nature blessed the state with very perfect environment for mulberry plantation and silkworm breeding. Collective Effort of faculty of sericulture and university of Punch will definitely promote it traditional industry on solid ground, Shah Sahib added.

Authorities of both institutions decided sign Memorandum of understanding soon for research as well as development in Sericulture and various identical areas associated with this enterprise old cottage industry in state.
