After an argument, the Pentagon backs down and stops plans to vaccinate Guantanamo detainees

The US Department of Defense (the Pentagon) announced on Saturday that it has temporarily halted a plan to provide Coronavirus vaccines to prisoners at Guantanamo after facing a wave of criticism.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said in a tweet. We remain committed to our obligations to preserve the safety of our forces. “None of the Guantanamo detainees will be vaccinated. We are in the process of stopping the plan as we review protocols to protect our forces.”

This decline comes just days after the Ministry of Defense announced that it would provide Corona virus vaccines to detainees at Guantanamo Bay next week. The plan was to provide the forty detainees at the base with the required two doses of available vaccines on a “voluntary basis.”
It is not known how many cases of Coronavirus that occurred at the military base, but the epidemic constituted an obstacle to conducting military legal measures, including the case of Khalid Sheikh Muhammad, accused of being one of the masterminds of the 11 attacks on American soil September 2001.

The plan met with violent responses, particularly from Republican lawmakers, before it was suspended temporarily, especially In light of the shortage of vaccines across the country.
