Advocacy groups are calling for a ban on invasive facial recognition technology

According to a study published yesterday by Amnesty International, New York City police are able to process images from 15,280 surveillance cameras with “invasive and discriminatory facial recognition software.” The investigation identified surveillance cameras in the Manhattan, Brooklyn and Bronx neighborhoods and was “carried out by thousands of volunteers from around the world,” according to an Amnesty press release.

Face Recognition Technology (FRT) mostly works by huge amounts of images of people are collected from the internet, often without the knowledge of the person concerned, and this set of image data is processed by an algorithm that tries to assign the photographs to a person’s identity, Al Jazeera reported.

Amnesty International launched the Ban the Scan campaign in January, which focused on using the technology in New York. They also promised that the investigations would be extended to the other districts of New York, Queens and Staten Island, and then to the rest of the world. There are many contradictions around the FRT. He has been widely criticized for failing to correctly identify women and women of color.

“It is widely acknowledged that technology reinforces racially discriminatory policing and may jeopardize freedom of peaceful assembly and privacy. Amnesty’s statement, which also states that when camera images are run on the FRT, the NYPD will be able to track every face in New York as it moves through the city.

Amnesty and 40 another organization states in an open letter dated 3 June that “facial recognition extends the scope and power of law enforcement to such an extent that the right of defendants to due process does not exist in substance when it comes to technology”

Pressure is exerted because U.S. law enforcement has extended the use of the FRT to the January 6 death toll after the riots, when supporters of former President Donald Trump tried to prevent President Joe Biden’s victory from being verified.
