A gunman is killed after attacking Duncanville Fieldhouse during a summer camp.

The police said that the man went to the field house through main vestibule doors with pistol. He exchanged words with camp employee and fired one round, which caused calls to the police.

The counselors carried the children to the safe area and started locking the doors, Stogner said. The attacker attempted to enter one class but couldn’t get in because the door was locked, Stogner said. He fired at the classroom door where they were children inside, he said.

Naomi Rogers, camp counselor, told KXAS-TV (NBC5) that she works with about 40 children and they were going play a game when they heard the shot.

“We should move them all over the room because building it’s glass and we had to find a safe space,” Rogers told NBC5. “The shooter actually came to our door… and said that if we didn’t let him see who he wanted see what he’s about to shoot at place up”.

According to Stogner, the shooter then crossed into the gymnasium and confronted police.

Children reunited with them parents with in help of Duncanville and DeSoto and Cedar Hill Police Departments, Stogner said.

The incident took place almost three weeks after the massacre. in Uvalde, where 21 people, including 19 children, were killed at Robb’s elementary school. Stogner said the department’s staff had recently been subjected to active trained shooters and “did exactly what they were taught.”

“We obviously understand that took place south of us”, Stogner said. “I can only talk about how we answered here and we did an exceptional job.”

Duncanville City Manager Aretha R. Ferrell-Benavides said that city would work with parents find new location for summer camp and that classes are likely to resume later this week.

“We want do sure they feel comfortable and safe coming back to this location,” she said.
